Thank you for your interest in the Community Learning and Development (CLD) award. This award recognises and celebrates the integral contribution of CLD to improving the educational outcomes and life chances of our children and young people.

CLD covers a broad range of practice including youth work, community based adult learning, family learning and community development. It is a field of professional practice that enables people to identify their own individual and collective goals, to engage in learning and take action to bring about change for themselves and their communities. Examples of CLD approaches include:

  • youth work; family learning and other early intervention work with children, young people and families;
  • adult learning, including adult literacies and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL);
  • learning for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups in the community, for example, people with disabilities, care leavers or offenders;
  • volunteer development; learning support and guidance in the community;
  • building the capacity of communities to meet their own needs

Thank you for your interest in the Curriculum Innovation category of the Scottish Education Awards. This award recognises early learning and childcare settings, schools and their partners that have developed innovative and impactful approaches to curriculum development and design. The culture and ethos of establishments nominated for this award category will be underpinning their curriculum design work with approaches which ensure the inclusion of all their children and young people and enhance equity and equality.

Current opportunities for curriculum innovation in Scotland might lie in the following areas:

  • Interdisciplinary learning (IDL)
  • The BGE offer from P6 to S3
  • Using Scotland’s Curriculum framework as set out in the Refreshed Narrative to re-visit and re-energise approaches to curriculum making
  • New approaches to timetabling in secondary
  • The development of play pedagogy from the early years onwards
  • The use of digital to extend and enhance the curriculum offer
  • The development of learner pathways leading to greater choice in the senior phase
  • Using the four capacities to support children and young people’s learning and development
  • Developing curriculum design capacity and skills with all involved in the setting and/or school community
  • Building on the opportunities provided by recent developments in DYW, STEM, Creativity and outdoor learning

They may be a classroom or learning assistant, youth worker, auxiliary, cleaner, janitor, administrator or in another role as long as they support the educational setting and community.
